Similarly, severe forms of sepsis, including septic shock, occur in an estimated 750,000 patients per year in the U.S., resulting in intensive care hospitalization and high rates of mortality. There are no current satisfactory direct treatments for severe sepsis other than broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, which is increasingly ineffective due to bacterial drug resistance. Novel therapy is needed to manage inflammation and hemodynamic stability in patients until an effective immune response is realized.
