Shawn P. Cain was appointed as President and Chief Executive Officer in September 2007. He joined the company as its Vice President of Operations in April 2005 and was previously employed by Arbios as a part-time consultant from December 2003 to March 2005. From June 2003 to March 2005, Mr. Cain was employed at Becton Dickinson’s Discovery Labware, Biologics Business, where he was responsible for the operation of two manufacturing facilities that produced over 900 biologics products. From January 1997 through May 2003, Mr. Cain was the Vice President of Operations for Circe Biomedical, Inc., where he was instrumental in the early development of the bioartificial liver technology, including development the company’s HepatAssist® product. Prior to Circe, Mr. Cain worked for W.R. Grace/Grace Biomedical from November 1986 to January 1997, where he supported the development of medical devices, including an LDL removal device. During this time, he also co-invented the cellular cryopreservation procedures that would prove critical to the development of the bioartificial liver technology. Mr. Cain received his M.S. degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Massachusetts and a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Northeastern University.
Jacek Rozga, M.D., Ph.D., is a co-founder of Arbios and Chief Scientific Officer of Arbios since its organization in August 2000. Dr. Rozga served as President of Arbios from August 2000 until November 2005. Dr. Rozga is currently Chairman of OncoTx, Inc., a private California corporation, since October 2005. Since 1992, Dr. Rozga has been a professor of Surgery at UCLA School of Medicine. Dr. Rozga was previously a research scientist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from 1992 to 2005. Dr. Rozga received his M.D. and Ph.D. degree in medical sciences from Medical Academy of Warsaw, Poland, and second Ph.D. degree in liver physiology from Lund University, Sweden. Dr. Rozga has seven patents and three patent applications pending, most of which have been licensed by Arbios. He has published 134 scientific papers and over 50 book chapters.
Scott L. Hayashi joined the company as its Chief Administrative Officer in February 2004, became the Secretary of the Company in July 2004 and was appointed Vice President of Administration in November 2004. In March 2005, Mr. Hayashi assumed the role as Chief Financial Officer. Prior to joining Arbios, Mr. Hayashi was a Manager of Overseas Development for Cardinal Health, Inc. from July 2000 to April 2002. Mr. Hayashi worked in finance and mergers and acquisitions for Northrop Grumman Corporation from March 1997 to July 2000 and for Honeywell, Inc. from July 1994 to December 1996. Mr. Hayashi earned a B.S. in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles, and an MBA from Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles.
Susan Papalia, RN, BSN, has joined Arbios Systems, Inc., as Vice President of Clinical Affairs and brings more than 20 years of clinical research expertise to Arbios Systems, Inc.
Early in her career, Susan held positions as Nurse Manager in hospitals in NY and MA before beginning her research career in cardiovascular medicine while working as a Clinical Research Coordinator/Manager at Tufts/New England Medical Center (Boston, MA). She then went on to design, develop and manage the Peripheral Vascular Program at St. Elizabeth's Hospital of Boston. Susan then focused her energy in the biotech industry and spent 16 productive years at Boston Scientific where she held management positions in US and International Clinical Research. Recently, Susan spent two years working in Europe and, upon her return to the US, assumed responsibility for worldwide post market patient Registries. Prior to leaving Boston Scientific, Susan was the Clinical Program Manager responsible for the strategic development, program management, budget and clinical oversight of the OLYMPIA Registry - the world's largest, global Drug Eluting Stent (DES) Registry - which is designed to capture "real world" clinical outcomes data in ~30,000 patients with coronary artery disease.
In 2006, Susan joined Mitralign, Inc. (Tewksbury, MA) as Director of Clinical Affairs where she was successful in implementing a strategic clinical plan and obtaining international regulatory approvals for Mitralign's feasibility study of a novel percutaneous mitral valve repair system. She served as the liaison between R&D, Quality Affairs, CROs and all outside physician consultants, including medical adjudicators and Core Lab physicians.
At Arbios Systems, Inc., Susan will be instrumental in leading the execution of the IDE pivotal trial of the SEPET™ Liver Assist Device - a multicenter, randomized, controlled study for the treatment of patients with acute exacerbation of chronic liver disease and severe hepatic encephalopathy.
